Food Facts & Trivia: Cookbooks

The first basic cookbook written for the housewife, rather than the trained chef with a full staff, was probably Eliza Acton's "Modern Cookery for Private Families", published in London in 1845

According to one source, the first cookbook published in America, 'The Compleat Housewife, or Accomplish'd Gentlewoman's Companion', Williamsburg, 1742.

According to another source, the first American cookbook was titled 'American Cookery, or the Art of Dressing Viands, Fish, Poultry and Vegetables, and the Best Modes of Making Pâtés, Puffs, Pies, Tarts, Puddings, Custards and Preserves and All Kinds of Cakes, from the Imperial Plumb to Plain Cake, Adapted to This Country and All Grades of Life' By Amelia Simmons: An American Orphan.

Alfred Charles Kinsey is famous for the two books his Institute for Sex Research published, 'Sexual Behavior in the Human Male' (1948) and 'Sexual Behavior of the Human Female' (1953). However, he was also a world authority on the taxonomy of gall wasps. He also wrote 'Edible Wild Plants of Eastern North America' (1943).

Nostradamus may be best known for his prophecies, but he also wrote a cookbook 'Excellent er Moult Utile Opuscule à tous nécessaire qui désirent avoir connaissance de plusieurs exquises recettes' (An Excellent and Most Useful Little Work, essential to all who wish to become acquainted with some exquisite recipes).
